Abstract

Introduction: Precarious work is analyzed from a critical perspective linked to labor commodification, alienation, and structural inequality (Marx, Sen, and Standing). Objective: To analyze the causes of precarious work and its implications for social well-being in Zacatecas, identifying the factors that explain its persistence and effect on the standard of living. Materials and Methods: A quantitative, descriptive-analytical study was conducted, based on the National Survey of Occupation and Employment (ENOE 2005-2025) and labor poverty indicators from CONEVAL. A precarity index was constructed considering instability, insufficient wages, vulnerability, and lack of labor protection. Results: In Zacatecas, labor poverty reaches 41.4% (2025); 41.6% of the employed population earns up to the minimum wage, and 57.8% work in the informal sector. Approximately 280,000 people experience insufficient wages. Precarious work creates a vicious cycle with poverty and produces effects of anxiety, anomie, and alienation, especially in the primary sector. Discussion: It is debated whether state economic growth translates into permanent jobs with sufficient income to cover basic needs. Labor flexibility is identified as a cause of the deterioration, while vulnerability and family networks mitigate the discontent, preventing social unrest. Conclusions: Precarious work constitutes a multidimensional and persistent structural barrier to well-being, limiting income, capabilities, and social cohesion. Public policies focused on stable employment, social protection, and capacity building are needed.
