Structured uncertainty model for the objective validation of technological packages based on technology readiness levels

Introduction: The validation of technological packages constitutes a fundamental process for demonstrating the maturity, functionality, and transferability of technologies based on Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs). However, conventional evaluation processes present high levels of subjectivity due to differences in evaluators’ criteria, the absence of quantitative metrics, and weaknesses in documentary traceability mechanisms. The objective of this study was to propose a mathematical model of structured uncertainty that enables the objective validation of technological packages through quantifiable criteria of evidence and uncertainty. Materials and Methods: The study corresponded to applied research with a quantitative approach. The methodological proposal was structured around five dimensions: verifiable evidence, documentary traceability, reproducibility, documentary integrity, and technical coherence. Each dimension was evaluated using weighting scales for the importance weight (Wi) and the compliance level (Ci), subsequently incorporating an uncertainty factor (1 − u) into the mathematical equation of the Technological Validation Index with Uncertainty (IVTITRLn). Results: Quantitative interpretation ranges were established to objectively classify technological compliance states. The applied case demonstrated that the model was sensitive to methodological inconsistencies and documentary gaps, proportionally reducing the final value of the IVTITRLn. Discussion: The findings showed that the formal incorporation of uncertainty strengthens the traceability and reproducibility of the technological evaluation process compared with traditional schemes based solely on expert judgment. Conclusions: The model constitutes an objective, quantifiable, and reproducible methodological tool with potential application in institutional processes for technology validation and technology readiness certification.
