Introduction: The development of research in basic sciences has been recognized by UNESCO and other international entities as an important pillar for sustainable development. For this reason, the formation of capabilities in these areas acquires special relevance for Higher Education. In Cuba, as part of state policy, the study of these careers is encouraged mainly in three universities: Havana, Las Villas and Oriente. The present study aims to characterize the current state of basic science courses at the UO, taking into account the behavior of three indicators: enrollment, admission and promotion. The statistical data of these careers corresponding to the period 2014 – 2024 were analyzed and compared. The methods used seek to illustrate the present patterns, identifying similarities and differences between the careers. The results of the indicators show marked differences between the Biology and Chemistry majors with Mathematics and Physics, although all four show a significant decrease in promotion during the last three years. It is concluded that the present panorama is relatively stable for the first two; while it is critical in the other two, putting them at real risk of disappearing from the institution. Furthermore, it can be seen that the modifications made to make admission to Higher Education more flexible have not been very effective in basic science careers
