Teaching and learning geometric figures and solids in fourth grade of EGB with GeoGebra and its connection to life

Introduction: The teaching and learning of geometry in Basic General Education faces various challenges due to the lack of traditional methods, the lack of use of new technologies, and the lack of contributions from the scientific community. GeoGebra offers options and a dynamic environment that are not adequately utilized and are not consistently integrated into everyday life, which could improve the results of its use. The objective is to develop and validate a teaching strategy to improve the teaching and learning of geometric figures and solids in fourth grade of EGB, integrating curricular relationships, research activities, and the use of GeoGebra. Materials and methods: A mixed-method study was conducted. For the initial diagnosis, 12 fourth-grade teachers were interviewed. The strategy was implemented with 36 students from a parallel school at the Domingo Faustino Sarmiento Educational Unit. Its effectiveness was measured by comparing the results of the initial and final quantitative evaluations, as well as the qualitative assessments of students and teachers. Results: External validation was conducted using the criteria of seven experts with experience in teaching, science, and the use of GeoGebra. Content analysis was applied to qualitative data; descriptive statistics were used for quantitative data regarding performance percentages. Discussion: After implementation, the percentage of students at high performance levels (A+ and C+) increased by approximately 50%, while the lowest levels (D–, E+, and E–) decreased to almost zero. The experts awarded average scores above 4.5/5 for each stage of the strategy and 4.9/5 for the overall assessment. Conclusions: It is concluded that the strategy significantly improved teaching-learning outcomes and facilitated curricular integration and teaching practices with GeoGebra. Its adaptation and further development with the integration of other complementary digital tools is recommended.
