Digital science communication management in a cuban network of young researchers

Introduction: Digital scientific communication demands specific competencies that are not always present in those who take on this role within research networks. This study characterizes the self-perceived competency profile, associated training needs, and declared barriers and motivations of those responsible for this function in a Cuban network of young researchers. Materials and Methods: A descriptive-exploratory cross-sectional study with a mixed-methods approach and convergent design. Ten responses out of 21 possible were analyzed using a diagnostic questionnaire administered in October 2025. Categorical variables were summarized using absolute frequencies and percentages; ordinal items were reported with median and interquartile range; open-ended responses were examined through inductive thematic analysis. Results: Writing for non-specialized audiences (Md = 4.0) and specialized scientific writing (Md = 3.5) received the highest scores. Search engine optimization, digital metrics analysis, email marketing, and audio production recorded the lowest scores (Md ≤ 2.5). The most frequently reported training needs were the design of digital communication strategies and digital community management. The primary barrier was a lack of academic time, while the most frequently cited motivation was the development of new professional skills. Discussion: The diagnosis reveals an uneven distribution: higher self-perceived competency in discursive skills and lower competency in strategy, evaluation, and digital positioning. Institutional recognition of the communicative role does not equate to the installed capacities needed to sustain it. Conclusions: It is recommended to design modular training activities and coordination routines compatible with the time and connectivity constraints identified.
