Sabermetrics in the Sports Field: A System of Activities for the Pedagogical Training of Baseball Pitchers

Sabermetrics, as a statistical analysis tool, has revolutionized modern baseball; however, its integration into sports training processes in Cuba is limited, particularly in the pedagogical preparation of pitchers. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a system of pedagogical activities to integrate sabermetrics into the training of senior category baseball pitchers, with emphasis on developing competencies for informed decision-making. A descriptive research was employed using theoretical (analytical-synthetic, systemic-structural-functional) and empirical (survey, interview, observation, documentary review) methods, with a sample that included 6 pitchers and 8 coaches from the Santiago de Cuba Baseball Academy. The results revealed that while 57.1% of pitchers have basic knowledge of sabermetrics, only 28.3% apply it regularly; furthermore, although 100% of coaches recognize its value, they also report difficulties in its didactic implementation. However, following the implementation of the activity system, significant improvements were observed in indicators such as active participation, content comprehension, and practical application. Consequently, the activity system proved to be an effective pedagogical tool, leading to the conclusion that integrating sabermetrics into sports training transcends technical aspects, enhancing cognitive processes such as critical thinking and analytical skills, which constitutes an essential contribution to sports pedagogy.
