Study of attitudes toward emerging digital technologies among university professors, considering personal, institutional, and educational factors

Introduction: The integration of Emerging Digital Technologies (EDT) in higher education has transformed teaching, generating complex attitudes among faculty. This literature review analyzes these attitudes, considering the personal, institutional, and training factors that influence their adoption. Materials and methods: A qualitative review was conducted of 25 studies published between 2021 and 2025, identified in databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, Redalyc, and Google Scholar using a Boolean search strategy. Rigorous inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied, and the selection process was documented in a flowchart. Data analysis was based on the organization and coding of information in a matrix of categories. Results: An intermediate level of digital competence among faculty was identified, with attitudes ranging from enthusiasm to concern. Key personal factors were age and prior experience, with younger faculty being more inclined to adopt EDT. Institutional support and an organizational culture geared toward innovation emerged as crucial facilitators, while digital stress, distrust of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and insufficient training were the main barriers. Discussion: Despite the abundant literature on digital competence, there is a clear lack of studies that comprehensively address attitudes toward digital technologies from complex psychological models. Cross-sectional quantitative designs predominate, which limits a deep understanding of the subjective dimensions of the phenomenon. Conclusions: It is necessary to promote research with mixed-methods approaches that explore the emotional, ethical, and pedagogical implications of technological integration, as well as to promote institutional policies that support a critical and sustainable adoption of digital technologies.
