Abstract

Introduction: This article addresses the assessment of a teaching strategy for improving the dentist's linguistic and communicative skills in English for Professional Purposes (EFP) based on the results obtained through a case study conducted at the Granma University of Medical Sciences. Materials and methods: A single case study, survey, and in-depth interview with the research subject were used to collect data. Results: The results showed a higher level of linguistic and communicative development in English for professional dental communication in the various contexts where the dentist works. This emphasis was placed on the practical implementation of professional communication situations, primarily for the subject studied. Discussion: Although the professional development of dentists in English has been studied from numerous disciplines—linguistics, psychology, pedagogy, and teaching—there is little scientific literature on the application of methodologies and strategies for linguistic and communicative development in PTI for dentists in diverse contexts. This approach, from the dialectical relationship between the logic of teachability to a formal and abstract level in which concrete subjects and professional performance do not intervene, is limited. Conclusions: The transformations that occurred in the selected dentist demonstrate the assimilation of fundamental activities in diverse contexts and the recognition of the teaching strategy for linguistic and communicative development in PTI for its epistemological and practical value in diverse contexts.
