Developing digital skills in university teachers: a digital education transformation initiative at the Universidad de Oriente

Introduction: Digital transformation in education has become increasingly important in recent years, especially in higher education institutions. The Universidad de Oriente, as an institution of excellence, has identified the need to develop digital competences in its teaching staff in order to improve the quality of teaching. In this context, we present an initiative for the digital transformation of education (ETD), which proposes the use of virtual learning environments to facilitate self-study and the preparation of teachers in the effective use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in their teaching practice. Materials and methods: A virtual learning environment will be used to enable teachers to access self-study courses specifically designed to develop digital literacy. The courses cover a variety of technological skills and pedagogical methodologies related to the use of ICT, adapted to each teacher's level of competence and needs. Results: It is expected that the implementation of the TDE at the Universidad de Oriente will contribute to strengthening the digital competences of the teaching staff. This will allow teachers to integrate ICT more effectively into their teaching practices, with a positive impact on the quality of teaching and its adaptability to the current needs of students. Discussion: The ETD initiative represents a significant change in the way teachers use ICT in their teaching practice. Furthermore, this initiative positions the Universidad de Oriente as an institution committed to educational innovation and lifelong learning, fostering a collaborative and learning environment beyond the local level. Conclusions: The initiative is key to the transformation of the educational model, with the aim of strengthening the digital skills of the teaching staff and improving the quality of teaching through the use of ICT.
