Legal knowledge for the social inclusion of older adults in the Virgen del Carmen neighborhood, La Libertad

Introduction: the social inclusion of older adults faces significant challenges due to the lack of knowledge that this vulnerable group has about their rights and the insufficient implementation of effective public policies. In this sense, legal training is considered a key strategy to empower these people, strengthen their rights and ensure their full integration into society, thus guaranteeing a dignified and equitable life. Objective: we set out to identify the legal needs of older adults in the Virgen del Carmen neighborhood, canton La Libertad in 2024, with the purpose of examining the existing legal context that favors the inclusion of this vulnerable group. Materials and methods: through the implementation of a qualitative approach and a hermeneutic phenomenological design, data collection was carried out through structured interviews and the implementation of a focus group. Discussion: the study reveals a disconnect between the legal framework and its implementation, which leaves the elderly vulnerable, due to limited knowledge of their rights. Results: It was found that this age group, located in this locality, has little knowledge of their legal rights, which restricts their ability to defend themselves and participate fully in the community, also, the need for continuous educational programs and awareness efforts to empower this vulnerable population was observed.
