Family functionality as a socioeducational context for the prevention of risky sexual behaviors among adolescents in Ica

Abstract

Introduction: Adolescence increases vulnerability to risky sexual behaviors, while family dysfunction weakens protection and contributes to negative outcomes in overall health. The objective of the study was to characterize family functionality and risky sexual behaviors among adolescents in Ica. Materials and methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted between February and November 2024, with a sample of 200 adolescents aged 13 to 17 years, selected through stratified probability sampling. Family functionality was assessed using the Family APGAR, while risky sexual behaviors were measured using the CSR-A questionnaire. Results: Sixty percent of adolescents presented some level of family dysfunction, and the most frequent risky sexual behaviors were inconsistent condom use (35%) and early sexual initiation (27.5%). The relationship between variables showed that adolescents from functional families had lower risk (25%) compared with those from dysfunctional families (64.3–71.4%). Discussion: These findings reinforce family functionality as a protective factor and suggest the need for comprehensive preventive programs that strengthen communication and intrafamily support, promoting safe sexual behaviors and adolescent well-being. Conclusions: A differentiated pattern was identified between family functionality and risky sexual behaviors.
