Mapping the Bibliographic Production in the Faculty of Natural and Exact Sciences at the University of Oriente: Thematic and Chronological Gaps

Abstract

Introduction: This article analyzes the publishing output of the Faculty of Natural and Exact Sciences (FCNE) at the University of Oriente (Cuba) between 1960 and 2022, with the aim of identifying thematic and chronological gaps in order to propose a publishing roadmap aligned with contemporary educational needs. Materials and methods: A qualitative bibliometric analysis was conducted using a record of 67 titles, classifying them by academic program, nature of the work, decade of publication, language, and format. This was complemented by a qualitative reading to identify under-represented disciplines and temporal imbalances. Results: Decades with no publications were identified (1970-1979), as well as low activity in the 1990s and 2000s, and critical thematic gaps in computer science, modern physics, instrumental chemistry, and cutting-edge biology. Publishing output is concentrated in educational biology and classical physics. Discussion: Chronological and disciplinary gaps limit the faculty's capacity to respond to current educational challenges, linked to institutional and national historical contexts. Conclusions: A strategic publishing plan with six lines of action is proposed to address these gaps, balance content, and project the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering (FCNE) toward international standards of science and teaching.
