The diffusion of Eastern European thought in Cuban academia: The Santiago Journal, a case study

Introduction: The late 1960s and, in particular, the 1970s in Cuba have frequently been interpreted as a period of cultural "Sovietization." During this period, the dissemination of Eastern European intellectual products is considered to have served as a means of indoctrination in Marxism-Leninism and socialist realism. This paradigm dominates contemporary literature on the subject. In response to the question: Is the dissemination of Eastern European spiritual production in cultural journals during the 1970s oriented toward the "Sovietization" of Cuban culture? Objective: This study aims to assess whether the dissemination of Eastern European spiritual production in the journal Santiago reflects a tendency toward cultural "Sovietization." Materials and methods: A qualitative methodology was followed with a documentary analysis of the 25 titles of Eastern European origin published in the journal during the period studied. Content analysis cross-cuts the study, making it possible to determine the theoretical and methodological cores of the texts published. Results: The results showed that, contrary to the indoctrination theory, Santiago prioritized the dissemination of heterodox and scientific theories. Discussion: The aesthetics of Bertolt Brecht, which offered an alternative and critical vision of socialist realism, and the semiotics of the Tartu-Moscow School, a transdisciplinary methodology within the USSR, are highlighted. Conclusions: The article concludes that the dissemination of theories in Santiago does not respond to a "Sovietization" project. The selection of heterodox theories and those under debate within the socialist community indicates a desire for scientific updating and to make the Cuban intellectual panorama more complex, refuting an unrestricted interpretation of ideological alignment. The article demonstrates the existence of spaces for the circulation of diverse thought even in a restrictive political and cultural context.
