Impact of Food and Nutrition Security on the Health of the Population of Namibe, Angola
Keywords:
Food security, Nutrition, Sustainable agriculture, Semi-arid climateAbstract
Introduction: This article highlights the importance of food and nutrition security in Namibe Province, Angola, a region characterized by adverse climatic conditions, such as a semi-arid climate and long periods of drought. These factors, combined with poor infrastructure, negatively affect agricultural production and limit the availability of nutritious food, resulting in high rates of food insecurity and malnutrition. The most vulnerable populations, such as children, the elderly, and pregnant women, suffer the most from this problem, which is aggravated by the lack of effective food storage and distribution systems. Difficulties in access and the high costs associated with food transportation and distribution increase the vulnerability of communities, especially in the coastal areas of Saco Mar, in Namibe. Materials and methods: This research, carried out by the Environmental Engineering program of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology of the University of Namibe, concludes that it is crucial to adopt sustainable agricultural practices to improve local food production and the nutritional quality of the population. Results: The need to implement stronger public food security policies, as well as nutrition education programs to promote healthy eating habits, is emphasized. Discussion: Diversifying agricultural crops, developing more efficient irrigation technologies, and training farmers are key measures to improve local production and reduce dependence on imported food. Furthermore, significant improvements in food distribution logistics are needed to ensure that food reaches all communities in a continuous and affordable manner. Conclusions: These actions would contribute to the overall well-being of the population and the reduction of food insecurity in the region.
