Abstract

Introduction: The purpose of the media is to transmit information. This contributes to the cultural memory of the different communities it represents. The institutional media of the Universidad de Oriente are not alien to this statement. This research is part of the eighth edition of the master's degree in Community Cultural Development, which aims to enable a first approach to the content of the institutional media of the Universidad de Oriente and its role in preserving the recent historical-cultural memory of the institution and the processes and communities associated with it. This systematization constitutes a relevant contribution to safeguarding the historical-cultural memory of the septuagenarian Universidad de Oriente and may represent challenges for the definition of consequent journalistic strategies in this regard. Materials and methods: The research design was based on the methods of knowledge construction analysis-synthesis and induction-deduction. A quantitative study anchored in the empirical method of content analysis was configured. Results: Based on the systematized experience, some results and challenges for this activity in the institution are discussed. It thus constitutes a valuable source of information for the conservation of the cultural memory of the institution by pointing out the issues addressed as representative of university events. Discussion: The fact of the imbalances in the categories studied for the approach and representation of the events that occurred at the Universidad de Oriente is notorious. These indicators raise the question about how journalistic communication is managed, since notable similarities were observed in the composition of the agenda (topics), the use of genres and other indicators regarding La Tablilla and public media in the country. Conclusions: The exploratory study carried out corroborated the relevance of studying the institutional media of the UO and its contribution to the preservation of the cultural memory of the institution and its community. This may represent challenges for the definition of consequent journalistic strategies in this sense.
