Abstract

Introduction: This research aims to evaluate the noise generated by vehicular traffic by using measuring instruments for comparison based on the environmental regulations in force in Ecuador related to the fundamentals in the surroundings of the Civic Plaza of Esmeraldas. Materials and methods: For this purpose, the descriptive method was used, which focuses on detailing the characteristics of a specific phenomenon or problem, without manipulating variables or establishing causal relationships. Results: Noise levels in the Civic Plaza of Esmeraldas consistently exceed the permissible limits established by Ecuadorian environmental regulations in all time slots evaluated. This indicates a widespread failure to comply with the standards necessary to ensure a healthy environment in this public area. Discussion: Prolonged exposure to high noise levels in the Civic Plaza has significant implications for public health and the well-being of visitors. Negative effects include stress, hearing problems, communication difficulties and sleep disorders, which underscores the urgency of addressing noise pollution in this area. Conclusions: The main noise sources identified are vehicular traffic and high concentration of people, especially during rush hours. The lack of noise barriers and the proximity of the square to busy roads contribute significantly to the high noise levels. It is crucial that local authorities implement effective measures, such as the installation of noise barriers, regulation of vehicular traffic and community awareness programmes, to reduce noise levels and comply with environmental regulations.
