Abstract

Introduction: The benefits of reading are impressive, through it you can expand your cultural horizon and develop your communication skills. For this reason, this research aimed to analyze reading habits and their impact on the academic performance of students at the sub-level of basic secondary school at the Jama Educational Unit. Materials and methods: The research method that was applied consists of three levels, of which activities were carried out, aimed at obtaining specific information that was handled in a sequential and ascending manner: exploratory, descriptive, explanatory; The approach used is quantitative, since data collection was carried out through a survey that allows demonstrating the study of the problem: with the following results; Results: In general, it is established that currently the students' reading habits are very good, therefore, a good level of reading habits is estimated, which has a positive impact on academic performance, while 100% of the Parents affirm that they consider reading important for their children to have good academic performance. Discussion: On the other hand, 66% of the students affirm that, if they have reading habits, 34% say that they do not. Which reflects that there is interest and predisposition of the members of the educational community in improving reading habits. Conclusions: The students stated that they like to read, but on certain occasions. It is here where the teachers showed the need to strengthen reading habits at all levels and disciplines of study, as a quality attribute in the personal training of the students, since the level of reading that they possess is clearly evident, for example. Therefore, it is necessary to continue encouraging good reading habits to obtain good educational performance, and thus be able to incorporate reading into their daily lives in a free and voluntary way.
