International academic networks: an inclusive and participatory approach

Abstract

Introduction: The internationalization of Higher Education in Cuba, particularly at the University of Artemisa, is based on the creation and strengthening of international academic networks. These networks foster knowledge exchange, cooperation, and innovation, highlighting the importance of connections in the academic sphere. This article aims to argue the importance of international academic networks in the context of Higher Education at Artemisa for achieving an internationalized university. Materials and methods: A mixed-methods approach with a descriptive-propositive design was used, structured in three phases: theoretical-conceptual (documentary analysis in Scopus and Web of Science) and empirical diagnosis (statistical analysis). The study population consisted of indexed publications, and the sample included 173 applications for membership in the International Network of Interdisciplinary Studies on Latin America and the Caribbean (RIEI-ALC). Results: The results showed a coordinated network that responds to its scientific policy, with a marked interest in educational improvement and social studies. Analysis of the 173 membership applications revealed that Cuba accounts for 78% of the applications, with twelve countries represented. 65.3% of applicants selected the area of improvement of educational processes, 58.4% social and community studies, 24.9% business and public management, 15% management for sustainable agricultural development, and 8.7% physical activity, sports, and recreation. Membership includes PhDs, Master's degree holders, graduate and undergraduate students, as well as professionals from various sectors. Discussion: The results confirm that the creation of the RIEI-ALC is a relevant response to the challenges of sustainable development in Latin America and the Caribbean, by articulating diverse capacities on a global scale and promoting a dialogue of knowledge that enriches the understanding of regional problems from a global perspective. The network is conceived as the ideal vehicle for operationalizing an internationalized university, where horizontal cooperation and the exchange of methodologies enhance the capacity to influence complex realities. Conclusions: It is concluded that the creation of the RIEI-ALC constitutes the main achievement of the proposed objective, demonstrating the relevance and impact of the proposal by achieving the participation of 173 researchers from twelve countries. The establishment of this network represents a significant contribution to the development of science, offering a network-based model for managing internationalization, transferable to other institutions with similar characteristics, and laying the groundwork for the generation of cutting-edge knowledge, advanced training, and influence on public policy.
