Abstract

Introduction: Folk dance reflects the cultural identity and traditions of a people, combining specific movements and traditional music. Beyond its artistic value, it demands high physical dexterity, which highlights the range of motion (ROM) and knee muscle strength. Dancers, considered athletes, face a high incidence of injuries, especially in the lower extremities. Mobility and strength are key to preventing injuries. However, there are few studies on folk dancers and their profile related to ROM and lower extremity muscle strength. Objective: To establish the normal range of motion (ROM) and knee muscle strength in folk dancers from the Unidanza Corporation of the province of Tungurahua, Ecuador. Materials and methods: The research was developed under a descriptive, observational, cross-sectional cohort design with a quantitative approach, approved by the ethics committee and with informed consent. Range of motion and knee muscle strength were evaluated in 100 dancers. Dancers over 15 years of age with at least one year of practice were included, excluding those with injuries or taking certain medications. A physiotherapy record was applied that recorded demographic data, knee flexion and extension, and flexor and extensor muscle strength. Results: The sample included 49% men and 515% women. There were no significant differences in age or BMI between sexes. However, men were heavier and taller, with significant differences (p < 0.05). Knee flexor and extensor muscle strength was greater in men, with statistical significance (p < 0.05). Discussion: The range of motion (ROM) in flexion was less than the reference value of 135° in both sexes (p = 0.000), while extension was complete (0°) in all participants. There were no significant differences in ROM between men and women. Conclusions: This study characterizes the muscle strength and range of motion of Tungurahua folklore dancers, showing greater strength in men and reduced flexion ROM. It highlights the need for balanced training to prevent injuries and suggests future biomechanical studies.
