Abstract

Introduction: In Ecuador, basic education students face challenges regarding reading comprehension. Objective: To evaluate changes in the reading comprehension of 5th-grade students at U.E. Magdalena Dávalos No. 32 following the implementation of an ICT-mediated pedagogical strategy during the 2025 academic year. Materials and methods: This study employed a quantitative, positivist approach with a pre-experimental design, evaluating 30 fifth-grade students and 5 Language and Literature teachers using a teaching practices questionnaire (α = .850), a reading comprehension test (α = .670), and a technology acceptance questionnaire; the dimensions of these instruments were analyzed using Spearman's Rho coefficient. Results and discussion: A pre-test/post-test comparison using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test revealed a statistically significant difference in total reading comprehension scores (Z = -4.782, p < .001), with a large effect size (r = .87). Furthermore, a strong positive association was identified between perceived usefulness and ease of use (ρ = .871, p < .001), and 100% of the students reported experiencing greater concentration during reading activities mediated by digital resources. Conclusion: Higher reading comprehension scores were observed following the intervention; however, due to the pre-experimental design and the absence of a control group, these changes do not allow for the establishment of definitive causality.
