Social Sustainability and Territorial Resilience: Equity, Inclusion, and Human Development for Community Transformation

Authors

Abstract

Social sustainability, by integrating conditions of equity, well-being, and human development, constitutes a fundamental dimension of sustainable development that promotes the construction of resilient communities. The general objective of this study is to analyze social sustainability from a territorial perspective, considering its main foundations, dimensions, related factors, and challenges in terms of building resilient communities. A qualitative, descriptive, and interpretative study was conducted, supported by a documentary review of scientific literature consulted in Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, SciELO, and Redalyc, prioritizing publications from the last five years. This information was complemented with documents from international organizations and examined through thematic content analysis. The findings show that social sustainability is a multidimensional phenomenon that integrates equity, social cohesion, social capital, education, employment, community participation, and institutional capacities. Challenges related to territorial inequalities, urban-rural gaps, and connectivity limitations were also identified, particularly in Colombia. Digital transformation represents both a risk of deepening inequalities and an opportunity to increase access to services and opportunities. It is inferred that building socially sustainable and resilient communities requires strengthening human and institutional capacities, promoting citizen participation, and consolidating multilevel, multi-actor, and multisectoral governance mechanisms. In this regard, comprehensive territorial strategies are recommended that integrate institutional cooperation, digital inclusion, and community capacity-building initiatives aimed at sustainably improving people's quality of life.
