Social representations of the naval sector in the popular language of Santiago de Cuba’s coastal communities

Authors

Abstract

Introduction: The study examines social representations of the naval sector expressed in the popular language of communities along Santiago de Cuba Bay. Materials and methods: A descriptive study with a process-oriented approach was conducted with a purposive sample of 100 participants; surveys, semi-structured interviews, and observation were used. Results: The repertoire includes words, proverbs, idioms, and symbols; some forms are linked to maritime occupations, while others circulate in everyday speech. Discussion: The findings connect social representation, maritime technolect, and oral tradition without establishing causal relationships for differences by age, occupation, or residence. Conclusions: The study documents situated representational contents and limits its scope to the coastal area examined.
